Winter Meetings Recap

On a day with blistering weather outside members of the South Asian Softball League gathered together to discuss the state of the SASL. They talked about many issues facing the SASL and the greater SAS community.

Representatives were there from the following teams.

Wolfpack
Desert Eagles
Dynasty
Force
GRAYS
Softballers
Empire

The first issue which was discussed was whether or not we should play one long season. The season would be from end of March until November. This idea was universally panned as too much Softball and would result in burning out.

It was discussed how we would deal with a one month lay off of Ramadan for those in the league that are Muslim. One of the ideas was to have a gap in the schedule and to resume the regular season and playoffs right after, perhaps with each team getting a bye or two during the season. This way the gap in the season would be two games at most.

A discussion was made about setting up a weeknight league. This idea was met with a tepid response. Players are going to be going to their respective teams and asking them what they think about this idea.

Divisions a hot topic was also discussed. This topic was discussed until everyone was blue in the face. Ultimately it was agreed that as the league grows. 14 teams in 2011 and possibly 16 in 2012 or 20 etc...going forward. The time is now to begin the divisions. Those that have played in a SAS set up with divisions like players on Force and Desert Eagles. Mentioned that they were fine with it and that there isn't going to be a perception of "A" and "B". The biggest issues that the league as a whole has right now. Is a high barrier to entry in to the league and teams consolidating. When teams consolidate there are many players who disappear and are never heard from again. Teams seemed to be ok with an 8 and 6 team set up.
Also discussed was the issue of getting consistent umpiring.

South Asian Sports Network is offering the ability for league members to get a job. If anyone is interested in working for the South Asian Sports Network you can email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for those that are interested in working for the radio program. Lastly two items were announced.

2012 will result in the launch of the South Asian Soccer League headed by Ali Nasrallah who will be the commissioner. Already since the meeting 3 teams have signed up for the league.

2012 will also result in the first youth initiative SA-Tots. Over the weekend three children have signed up just from word of mouth from the meeting. SA-Tots will be a class that will teach the young children the fundamentals of Baseball and Softball and will also possibly include EyeBall. More information will be provided shortly.

Any questions email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it The above were just discussions and were non binding. This was just a summit to discuss the potential issues and to get a better idea of what is going on within the league and served as a chance for the league members to talk about issues that were facing their teams.

Lastly the subject of going to divisions was brought up. This was a passionate subject as the phones lit up and a constant busy signal was coming in to the callers. But Saad Yousuf, Faizal Sheriff, and PJ McKenna were able to get through and voice their opinions on going for divisions or not.
